International Overdose Awareness Day
For 10 Years Nichols Center honors International Overdose Awareness Day each year on August 31st. In 2021 dedicated the Kirk Nichols Remembrance Garden to families who have lost someone to substance use or mental illness. This annual observance provides a space for families to come together and remember their loved ones.

The center's approach aligns with the global theme of International Overdose Awareness Day, which aims to raise awareness about overdose, reduce the stigma surrounding drug-related deaths, and acknowledge the grief felt by families and friends.

By opening the Remembrance Garden, the Nichols Center creates a dedicated space for reflection and healing. Families are able to place custom engraved stones dedicated to their loved one.

The Nichols Center's observance incorporates elements that allow community members to connect, support one another, and raise awareness about the ongoing opioid crisis.

In 2024 Nichols Center expanded this annual event to include the arts community. The Douglas Cultural Arts Council hosted the community wide training and engagement event with the promise that every year we will expand our awareness efforts to incorporate artistic expressions of remembrance and support.

By hosting this annual event, the center contributes to the broader effort to combat overdose and support those affected by substance use disorders in their community.
